Self Soothe
Bedtime has never been easy in our home. We’re talking tears, tantrums and 9pm lights out at the earliest. Six and a half years later it’s a bit more manageable but add mask wearing, no physical school, no playing with friends, playgrounds closed, no camp and many difficult but much needed conversations about world events has left a very anxious only child (and family). We’ve always used music, lighting and scent to soothe but over the past few months we have added a few more things that I wanted to share with other parents to help our children feel safe and calm.
Lavender: One of the most resourceful essential oils known for its ability to relax and calm. Never apply directly to the skin of a baby or child but used as aromatherapy in a diffuser or in a lotion can be a powerful evening ritual to signify the mind and body that it’s time to get ready for bed.
Massage: A little oil mixed with lotion is the perfect “it’s time to go to bed” step.
Weighted animal: Deep touch of weighted items can have a calming and grounding effect for children. It helps a child to self soothe and regulate their emotions. I am not a doctor so please talk to your pediatrician or occupational therapist for more info.
Cocoon seat: Great for snuggling up with a bedtime book or just a comfortable space for your child to get cozy.
Calm app: We really enjoy the “soundscapes” for bedtime. My son enjoys picking a new sound every night from gentle rain to trains chugging in the distance.
